Growing in the Desert Changes the Question
In a place where water is limited, temperatures are extreme, and fresh food can be difficult to access, agriculture has to work differently.
AeroZona is exploring what that can look like.
That includes aeroponics and hydroponics, but also soil-based growing, drip irrigation, shade systems, renewable energy, water conservation, native and desert-adapted plants, composting, and other approaches that make sense for our environment.
Some ideas will work. Some will need to change.
The learning is part of the project.
A Place to Grow and Learn
The “Educational” in Agro-Educational is intentional.
As AeroZona develops, we want the site to become a place where people can see different approaches to growing food in an arid environment and understand how they work.
We’ll document what we plant, what we build, how much water different systems use, what succeeds, what doesn’t, and what we learn along the way.
Over time, we hope AeroZona can support:
- Demonstrations of low-water growing methods
- Hands-on workshops and community learning
- Experiments with aeroponics, hydroponics and desert agriculture
- Education about water, soil, food systems and renewable energy
- Opportunities for students, growers and community members to participate
- Locally grown food for communities in La Paz County
Why La Paz County?
AeroZona is located in rural La Paz County in western Arizona—a landscape defined by extraordinary desert ecosystems, agricultural communities, limited water resources, and long distances between many residents and essential services.
It is also a place where questions about water, agriculture, energy and food security are deeply connected.
That makes it an important place to experiment with what a more locally rooted, water-conscious food system might look like.
We don’t expect AeroZona to answer those questions by itself.
We do hope it can become one small place where people can try things, learn together, share information and grow something useful.
This Is Just the Beginning
AeroZona isn’t being built overnight.
We’re starting small, learning from the land, working with what we have, and allowing the project to evolve as we discover what our community needs and what works in this environment.
That means you’ll see the process—not just the finished product.
